I've long thought about this in my own disaster-scenario ideas. The author argues that there is no more practical conveyance than a bicycle in times of emergency. Load up the kids, some basics, and pedal out of town or to safety....

Thank you for the reinforcement.
The more I think about using my bike as an escape vehicle, the more I like the idea. The worse the emergency, the better the bike will perform over a car or other petroleum-powered option.
