Gallup poll on Mormonism

It's been a few weeks since my last post (work and other obligations have had be traveling and quite busy the past weeks/months), but someone pointed me to this recently, and I thought I'd post both as an interesting read and for future reference.

It's a summary of a Gallup poll on Mormons (or, more correctly, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)

An interesting, insightful, and in some ways disheartening read.

Especially interesting to me was the fact that Republicans (the dominant political party in Utah and some other western states where Latter-day Saints are concentrated) tend to have a more negative view of Mormons than either Democrats or Independents.

No matter how compelling a candidate Mitt Romney may appear to some, he's got an uphill battle in many respects, even in 21st-Century America. Further fodder, perhaps, to the argument that the first LDS President will need to be a Democrat.

postscript: two more related pieces (thanks Andy for the links!):

And one more
